UNA
VOCE means With One Voice. The voice of a collective
of different sound artists from diverse background e.g musician,
DJ and sound artist who congregate to form an art event that demonstrates
each others artistic traits. UNA VOCE 2005 is a 24hrs sound
festival exploring experimental sound, electronic music and the
creative use of new and emerging technologies. This project explores
and searches the different language and meaning of sound in todays
context.
In a sense, the experience of performed or prepared sound reasserts
the materiality of everyday life; as sound plays a tremendous role
in the construction of space. The flow of our daily lives is marked
by a shifting of our senses of time and space within the ever expanding
realms of a rapidly globalizing place. We are extending ourselves
into new modes of communication enabled through digital cultures.
It is not just the sounds of an environment that are threatened
with extinction but our ability to listen to them, to distinguish
a tune and rhythm to open ourselves to more germinative thinking.
Projected sounds are always perceived and experience it as composed
music, the objective of this project is to create an experience
of sound in its pure form to enable audiences and practioners
to engage sound art as a discourse in relation to their respective
artistic practices. This project also challenges the boundaries
and perceptions of the physical and mental state of each individual
through the creation of sound art.

Our aim is to open up more possibilities of working together among
the local sound artists in Singapore. This is to create a platform
for sound-based works through digital and analog production mediums.
Through this event, We hope to develop consistent practice of sound
art and a long term appreciation of sound art as a contemporary
art form.We are currently organising discussions among practitioners
that will lead to the public presentations of each individuals
respective art forms in UNA VOCE 2005. At the same time, we are
conducting sound art workshops in schools and also developing sound
production projects with theatre groups and local sound production
companies in Singapore. We hope to develop this inaugural festival
into a international festival of sound art. We are planning to make
this festival as a yearly event and will be focusing more towards
the local artists for this year. As time progress, we hope to invite
international artists to be part of the festival and to establish
Singapore as a cultural and industrial hub for sound art and sound
productions.

Pink
Ark is a sound collective formed by artists Zulkifle Mahmod and
kAI (Lam Hoi Lit) as an extension of their art practices in the
medium of installation, video and live performances. The idea of
this inter-disciplinary practice came about when Zul and kAI got
together to discuss the possibilities of sound productions based
on their respective art practices. Both artists had come from sculpture
background and have been practicing three-dimensional art since
1995.
Pink
Ark is a respond by the founding members to explore the sensibilities
of sound production in the field of visual art practice. The group
seeks to invite artistic collaborations from practitioners of various
backgrounds (in and out of the art context) to expand the possibilities
of sound production, through spontaneous manipulation of assorted
sounds and the fusion of projected live and recorded sounds, as
a collaborative form to promote inter-disciplinary practices. Pink
Ark aims to raise a heightened appreciation in the field of audio
and visual arts practice as a total experience.
To
date, Pink Ark has released an album Pink Ark in 2004
and is currently working on the release of their second album. This
year, they will be starting a sound art research and development
centre as a practical and theorectical discourse with like-minded
artists. Since Pink Arks formation last year, they have collaborated
with musicians, performance artists, poets, video artists, dancers
and theatre practitioners.
