| CONCEPTUAL
BACKGROUND:
Pink
Ark
is a sound collective formed by artists, Zulkifle
Mahmod and kAI (Lam Hoi Lit) as an
extension of their art practices in the medium of installation,
video and live performances. The idea for this cross-disciplinary
practice came about when Zul and kAI got together to discuss the
possibilities of sound productions based on their respective art
practices. Both artists had come from sculpture background and have
been practicing three-dimensional art since 1995.
Pink
Ark
is a respond by the founding members to explore the sensibilities
of sound production in the field of visual art practice. The group
seeks to invite artistic collaborations from practitioners of various
backgrounds (in and out of the art context) to expand the possibilities
of sound production, through spontaneous manipulation of assorted
sounds and the fusion of projected live and recorded sounds, as
a collaborative form to promote cross-disciplinary practices. Pink
Ark aims to raise a heightened appreciation in the field of audio
and visual arts practice as a total experience.
BRIEF
HISTORY:
The
collective's name, Pink Ark, came about through the circumstances
when the founding members first met to live and work together in
late 2002 at their current workspace, Studio 19. The studio's interior
was originally painted with different shades of pink where the artists
were going through a formative year as a collective of independent
artists sharing ideas and working together. The Ark in Islamic and
Biblical notions is a vessel of salvation, built by a man before
Christ's time. He had visions of a big flood that will engulf earth
therefore he embarked on a mission to built a monumental sea vehicle
that was to be self-sufficient in every needs in order to survive
the traumatic punishment of the big flood on human kind. The Ark
in this context, has a reference to religious connotations, but
Pink Ark aims not to be inclined to such moralistic religious affairs,
but in fact is using this periodic story to illustrate its spirit
of strength and endurance as a philosophy of it's artistic productions.
To
date, Pink Ark has released an album Pink Ark in 2004
and is currently working on the release of their second album. This
year, they will be starting a sound art research and development
centre as a practical and theorectical discourse with like-minded
artists. Since Pink Arks formation last year, they have collaborated
with musicians, performance artists, poets, video artists, dancers
and theatre practitioners
